LONE BLUES

I am alone but not lonely

I just remember brushing a lover’s hair

How it would feel to draw someone

Back between my knees

Brushing hair, sneaking up above

The bar to the room where coffee bags are stored

The freezer, the old party hats

To feel the blues throb from downstairs

Draw you back between my knees

With that taste of beer and your hair brushing my cheek

My shoulders

And hear the blues float up and recognize

That 12-bar structure

And know there is a wisdom we never suspected

I am alone but not lonely

I just remember brushing a lover’s hair
